Student Class Placement 2008-2009
It is our goal to place students in classroom environments that are well matched to their individual learning styles. Through thoughtful placement and clustering of students, we plan to provide a successful learning experience for all children. While there is no perfect system, it’s important that you realize how hard our teachers work to get it right. We actively encourage staff and parent input in order to meet the needs of individual students, and we also strive to meet our greatest priority, which is to develop well-balanced, heterogeneous classroom groups across all grade levels.
While we value and attend to parent input during this process, we have to coordinate and balance many other daunting variables in the best interests of all children. This is the way that we try to provide the most successful education for every child.
SOME of the variables include the following:
- differentiating to personalize learning and “teach to the range” of all of our students (providing for both remediation and extension)
- special education inclusion considerations
- personality characteristics
- learning styles
- peer-relationships
- teacher’s insights (both classroom and specialists)
- parent’s insights
- trying to place every child with a friend
We work very hard to adjust each class’ makeup based on all of these variables. Also we intend to scrutinize even more closely the needs of children with social, emotional or behavioral concerns. Clearly, placement is a daunting and formidable task and it is not taken lightly. We all invest a great deal of time in this process, and we value your input. However given all of these considerations, we do not “guarantee” placements with individual teachers.
Thus, I must make you aware of the rule:
Parents may not request a specific teacher by name. Any letters received with specific requests (by name) cannot be considered or accepted and will be ignored other than the acceptable information that you share regarding your child’s placement. Letters are due no later than Wednesday, April 16th, 2008 via e-mail to the attention of Mr. Irvine at girvine@nrsd.net
Please be aware of the following additional guidelines in order to help us during our placement process and in order to prevent any misunderstandings.
- We give parents the option to submit insights relative to their child’s learning style and/or social-emotional needs, in writing, each spring. This is the appropriate time for input.
- All letters from parents will be seriously considered if received at this time, but there will be no individual responses to your letters, and no guarantees can be made.
- Final report cards will provide you with the name of the teacher with whom your child will be placed during the next school year.
Sincerely,
Greg Irvine
Principal
